A little background on the beauty industry…

Beauty is a booming industry. The worth of the global beauty industry is currently at $532 billion (2020). Unfortunately, U.S. laws for cosmetics safety are virtually unchanged since they were created back in 1938. In the US — unlike in Canada and Europe, where well over 1,300 unsafe ingredients are banned for use in beauty products — unbelievably, the FDA has prohibited only partially banned 30 ingredients or related compounds.

So what’s the big deal?

Many ingredients used in cosmetics are known to cause health and environmental problems. Reproductive harm, endocrine disruption, neurotoxicity, organ toxicity, DNA damage, cancers, and more. Yuck! While it’s hard to believe that conventional beauty companies would ever include such ingredients in their products, the fact is that they do—it’s still common practice and perfectly legal.

Enter clean beauty…

When I first started doing makeup professionally 16 years ago, it didn’t seem like there were a lot of options for healthy AND great performance in the cosmetic world. But today, the rise of quality companies and brands who are saying no to toxic ingredients is encouraging!

Clean beauty is made without ingredients shown or suspected to harm human health. This means that yes, man-made ingredients are clean as long as they’re safe and non-toxic. This also means that clean beauty doesn’t have to be all-natural, preservative-free, etc. Clean beauty is synonymous with non-toxic beauty.

Rather than focus on buzzwords like “natural” and “organic,” switching to clean beauty products focuses on eliminating as many toxins as possible from our daily products.

Clean beauty is also about making ourselves more aware. Since the beauty industry lacks regulation, it’s up to us to become familiar with the most common toxins in our skincare, beauty, body, and hygiene products. Unfortunately, that means we as the consumers have a lot of responsibility to pay attention to what’s in our cosmetics.
